A heartbreaking tragedy has left a family devastated and an entire community mourning the loss of a young life gone far too soon. On the night of May 12, 2026, a fatal head-on collision along NC Highway 105 near the Avery County line claimed the life of 20-year-old Daylen H. Buchanan of Bakersville, North Carolina.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:31 p.m. when a southbound 2017 Ram truck crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the 2019 Ram truck driven by Daylen. Tragically, Daylen succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Authorities stated that the other driver, identified as Alex Gil Hernandez, 18, of Zionville, was transported to Watauga Medical Center with minor injuries and later charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving. Troopers also noted that neither speed nor impairment are believed to have contributed to the crash. NC Highway 105 remained closed for several hours as investigators worked the scene and gathered evidence.
